What is absenteeism?
Absenteeism refers to an employee's habitual or intentional absence from work. It can be voluntary (e.g. taking personal days, unapproved leave) or involuntary (e.g. due to illness, injury, family emergencies, or mental health challenges). High absenteeism rates can indicate underlying issues such as poor employee wellbeing, low engagement, or an unhealthy work environment.
Employees are categorised into one of three groups, which reflect the level of risk they are exposed to:
Low risk - No significant factors pointing towards the likelihood of being absent from work
Neutral - Minimal significant factors pointing towards the likelihood of being absent from work
High risk - Considerable significant factors pointing towards the likelihood of being absent from work
How we calculate absenteeism risk
The total risk score for Absenteeism is calculated as a weighted average of the scores from four key indices, all based on data gathered from Daily Reflections in the YuLife app.
🧠 Science Behind
Daily Reflections' health questionnaire includes nearly 500 questions, each with its own relevancy period - the amount of time an answer continues to contribute to risk scoring.
Examples:
“Did you exercise yesterday?” – relevant for 1 day
“Do you drink?” – relevant for up to 1 year
A question only influences risk calculations while its relevancy period is active.
The sub-indices are:
Mental health & stress-related absenteeism
Physical health absenteeism risk
Work-life imbalance & recovery deficit
Burnout
Mental health & stress-related absenteeism
This sub-index assesses the risk of absenteeism stemming from mental health challenges, including feelings of depression, unmanageable stress, and their impact on an employee's capacity to attend and perform at work.
Mental Health & Stress-Related Absenteeism is weighted appropriately as mental health issues are a significant and growing
cause of absence.
Physical health absenteeism risk
This sub-index measures the likelihood of employees being absent from work due to physical ailments, chronic pain, injuries, or general physical health issues that impair their ability to perform duties.
Physical Health Absenteeism Risk is weighted appropriately, reflecting direct health impacts.
Work-life imbalance & recovery deficit
This sub-index evaluates the risk of absenteeism arising from an unhealthy work-life balance, insufficient recovery time, and the negative impact of lifestyle choices (e.g. substance use) on work attendance and performance.
Work-Life Imbalance & Recovery Deficit is weighted appropriately as it represents more indirect or foundational factors that contribute to the other, more direct, causes of absenteeism.
Burnout
The Burnout Index is weighted appropriately due to its established strong correlation as a leading indicator of absenteeism.
The total risk score for Burnout is calculated as a weighted average of the scores from its three sub-indices. Learn more.
