1. If employees are furloughed because of COVID-19 can their group protection benefits continue to be covered on their pre-reduction salary?

Cover will continue to be provided under the temporary absence provisions of the policy. For Group Life & GCI cover can be provided for up to 3 years providing they are still considered an employee. For GIP cover can be provided for up to 1 year providing they are still considered an employee. Please refer to the relevant policy terms & conditions for full details. Data will need to be provided on their pre-furloughed salary and premiums must be paid on the full benefit.

2. If employees take (or are forced to take) a salary reduction (including to £0) because of COVID-19 can their group protection benefits continue to be covered on their pre-reduction salary?

For Group Life & GCI benefits cover can continue on the pre-reduction salary for a maximum period of 6 months, providing they are still considered an employee. Data will need to be provided on their pre-reduction salary.For GIP we will allow salary to be based on the average of the (1) the employee’s salary at the last policy anniversary date and (2) the employee’s gross taxable earned income over the 12 months prior to incapacity. Data must be provided on this amended salary definition.All requests to do this (for any product/scheme) must be in writing from the employer confirming the reduction in salary is due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their company and premiums must be paid on the correct benefit
